What is a sailmaker's needle?

A sailmaker's needle is a special needle with a triangular cross-section and sharp edges, specifically designed for working with rope and heavy sailcloth. The triangular shape cuts through the material rather than simply piercing it.

Advantages of the complete set

Ready to use immediately: yarn and matching needle in one set - you can start working right away.

Perfectly matched: The sailmaker's needle is precisely matched to the yarn thickness for optimal results.

Economically: Cheaper than buying yarn and needles separately.

Practical: Ideal for on the go or as an emergency kit on board.

The waxed rigging twine

High wax content: ROBLINE rigging twine is characterized by a particularly high wax content, which makes the twine extremely supple and water-repellent.

Polyester base: UV-resistant, durable and colorfast - ideal for marine applications.

Dimensionally stable: Wraps and knots retain their shape better and do not slip.

Application areas

  • Whipping (securing rope ends)
  • Work on sheets and halyards
  • Hand sewing on sails
  • Repairs to sailcloth and tarpaulins
  • Rigging of blocks and fittings
  • Seizing work
  • Traditional Seamanship

Working with the sailmaker's needle

Threading: Thread the waxed rigging twine through the eye of the needle. The high wax content makes threading easier.

Piercing: The triangular shape of the needle cuts through the material - work with even pressure.

Whippings: Perfect for professionally securing rope ends against fraying.

Sewing work: Ideal for repairs to sails, tarpaulins and heavy sailcloth.

Color selection

White: Classic and versatile, ideal for most applications.

Brown: Warm and traditional, especially for classic yachts and leatherwork.

Navy: Dark blue, inconspicuous and nautical, goes well with dark ropes and sails.

💡 Tip

The 0.8 mm set is the most versatile and suitable for most whipping and marling work. We also recommend the 0.8 mm version for hand-sewing sails. The 1.0 mm set is ideal for thicker ropes or when a particularly robust winding is desired. Before first use: Pull the yarn through your fingers to distribute the wax evenly and make the yarn even more supple. The sailmaker's needle is sharp – work carefully and use a thimble if necessary. Keep the set in your onboard toolbox – this way you'll always have everything you need for repairs while underway.

⚠️ Important

The sailmaker's needle is very sharp – store it safely and work carefully. Use a thimble to protect your fingers if necessary. The waxed rigging thread is not suitable for load-bearing applications – it is intended solely for marling, whipping, and sewing. The high wax content can soften at very high temperatures – store the set in a cool, dry place. After use: Clean the needle and store it dry to prevent rust (even though sailmaker's needles are usually made of stainless steel).

Ideal for

  • Sailors who maintain their own equipment
  • On-board tool kit for on the go
  • Sailmakers and riggers
  • Boat owners for repairs and maintenance
  • Beginners in traditional seafaring work
  • Emergency repair kit for onboard use
