D-SPLICER Soft Fid - Innovative splicing tool made of Dyneema

The D-SPLICER Soft Fid is the innovative solution for all splices with core-sheath constructions where conventional metal drawing or hollow needles reach their limits. Especially with modern, very tightly woven rope constructions such as RunnerTwin, the Soft Fid enables splicing work that would be impossible with rigid needles.

Product features

  • Made from Dyneema® - Flexible yet extremely tear-resistant
  • Two-tone construction - white outer layer and colored hollow braid for easy handling
  • For core-sheath ropes - Especially for modern, tightly woven rope constructions
  • Three sizes available - For rope diameters from 4 mm to 18 mm
  • Gentle on the material - No damage to delicate weaves
  • Professional quality - Proven in demanding splicing work

Why Soft Fid?

Modern high-performance ropes with core-sheath construction are often woven so tightly that conventional metal needles damage the braid or cannot penetrate it at all. The Soft Fid solves this problem with its flexible Dyneema construction.

This is how the Soft Fid works

The Soft Fids is easy and effective to use:

  1. Preparation: Pull the end of the rope to be inserted into the white sheath of the soft fid.
  2. Threading: Using a thin splicing needle, pull the colored end of the soft fid through the long part of the rope.
  3. To finish: Now pull firmly on the colored end of the soft fid so that the white sheath is pulled through the rope with the end of the rope to be inserted.

Construction and material

White sheath: The white outer sheath holds the end of the rope to be inserted and protects it when it is pulled through the mesh.

Colored hollow braid: The colored inner part made of Dyneema® serves as a pull rope and is available in different colors (red, grey, blue) depending on the size - for better overview when using multiple Soft Fids.

Dyneema® material: Extremely tear-resistant yet flexible enough to glide through even the tightest weaves.

Application areas

  • Core-sheath rope with tight braiding
  • RunnerTwin and similar modern designs
  • High-performance sheets and halyards
  • Dyneema rope with polyester sheath
  • Regatta sailing and yachting
  • Professional splicing work on modern ropes

Advantages over metal needles

Flexibility: The Soft Fid adapts to the weave instead of spreading it out - gentler on the material.

No damage: No sharp edges or hard points that could damage sensitive high-performance fibers.

For tight meshes: It even penetrates where metal needles fail.

Easy to use: The two-tone design makes the application intuitive and clear.

💡 Tip

Choose the Soft Fid size to match your rope diameter. The length specification (e.g., 1.0 + 0.6 m) indicates the length of the white sheath and the colored pull cord. For best results: Mark the points on the rope where you will pass through the strands before splicing. Use a thin, smooth splicing needle to thread the colored end through – the smoother the needle, the easier the Soft Fid will glide through tight braids. Once threaded, the Soft Fid can be reused multiple times. Store it clean and dry to maximize its lifespan.

⚠️ Important

The Soft Fid is specifically designed for core-mantle constructions with tight braids. For simple hollow braids, conventional splice fids are often sufficient. Pull evenly and with control when threading – jerky movements can damage the braid. The Soft Fid is made of Dyneema and is extremely tear-resistant, but avoid sharp kinks or edges that could damage the fibers. After contact with salt water, rinse with fresh water and allow to dry. Regularly check the Soft Fid for damage – a damaged Soft Fid should be replaced.

Ideal for

  • Regatta sailors with modern high-performance ropes
  • Professional riggers and riggers
  • Sailmakers and ropemakers
  • Yacht owners with core-jacket sheets
  • Boat builders and shipyards
  • Anyone who works with tightly woven modern rope constructions

Perfect complement

The D-SPLICER Soft Fid is the ideal complement to conventional splicing fids and splicing needles. Use classic fids for standard work, and the Soft Fid for demanding core-sheath constructions – this way you are perfectly equipped for all splicing tasks.
