What is Dyneema® SK78?

Dyneema® SK78 is a next-generation ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMPE) fiber. It is among the strongest fibers in the world and offers an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio.

Advantages of Dyneema® rigging twine

Exceptional strength

High breaking strength: Dyneema® SK78 is up to 15 times stronger than steel at the same weight. Even at a diameter of only 1.0 mm, the yarn offers an impressive breaking strength.

Reduced elongation: Compared to traditional materials, Dyneema® hardly stretches, resulting in more precise and durable marl work.

Smooth surface

Pleasant handling: The smooth surface makes the yarn pleasant to handle and allows for clean, even windings.

No wax required: Unlike traditional rigging twine, Dyneema® does not require wax impregnation - it is naturally smooth and dimensionally stable.

longevity

UV-resistant: Dyneema® SK78 is highly UV-resistant and retains its strength even under intense sunlight.

Water-resistant: The material does not absorb water and does not rot - ideal for marine applications.

Abrasion resistant: High abrasion resistance ensures a long service life even under mechanical stress.

Application areas

  • Marl work on modern high-performance pods
  • Whipping in Dyneema and Spectra rope
  • Seizing operations under high loads
  • Rigging of blocks and fittings
  • Regatta sailing and performance yachting
  • Wherever high strength at low weight is required

Dyneema® vs. Traditional Rigging Twine

Strength: Dyneema® offers significantly higher breaking loads at the same or smaller diameters.

Weight: Significantly lighter than traditional materials - important for weight optimization.

Elongation: Minimal elongation ensures dimensionally stable marl work.

Feel: Smooth surface without a wax layer that could soften when heated.

Area of application: Particularly suitable for modern high-performance ropes and regatta use.

Color selection

White: Classic and highly visible, ideal for a traditional look with modern features.

Blue: A nautical color, it goes perfectly with blue rope.

Red: Striking and decorative, ideal for accents and markings.

Black: Modern and inconspicuous, shows dirt less.

💡 Tip

Dyneema® rigging twine is particularly suitable for marling modern high-performance sheets made of Dyneema or Spectra – the materials are a perfect match. When marling: Wind the twine tightly, but keep in mind that Dyneema is very smooth and offers less friction than waxed twine. For a secure finish, we recommend carefully melting the ends with a lighter – Dyneema melts at approximately 150°C and forms a strong bond. Due to its high tensile strength, you can achieve fewer wraps with whippings compared to traditional twine. Store spools protected from direct UV radiation, even though Dyneema is highly UV-resistant.

⚠️ Important

Although Dyneema® rigging twine has a high breaking strength, it is not suitable for load-bearing applications as a fastening material. It is intended solely for marling, whipping, and seizing work. Dyneema® has a low melting point (approx. 150°C) – avoid frictional heat and direct contact with hot surfaces. When fusing the ends, work carefully and briefly to avoid weakening the material. Dyneema® is very smooth – knots can come undone more easily than with rougher materials. Use appropriate knotting techniques or fuse the ends. UV radiation can reduce strength over time – although Dyneema® is very UV resistant, protection from prolonged direct sunlight is recommended.

Ideal for

  • Racing sailors and performance yachts
  • Modern yachts with Dyneema rigging
  • Weight-conscious sailors
  • Professional riggers and riggers
  • High-performance applications in yachting
  • Anyone looking for maximum strength at minimum weight
