Rigging twine is a traditional maritime yarn used for a variety of tasks on board ships. The name derives from "rigging"—the standing and running rigging of a sailing vessel. Today, rigging twine is used for both functional and decorative purposes.
Water-repellent: The wax coating protects the yarn from moisture and prevents the fibers from swelling.
Supple: Waxed yarn is easier to work with and lies flatter – important for clean marl work.
Long-lasting: The wax protects the fibers from UV radiation, salt water and mechanical wear.
Dimensionally stable: Knots and wrappings retain their shape better and do not slip.
Round shape: Unlike twisted yarn, braided rigging yarn has a uniformly round shape, which is particularly suitable for marl work.
Uniform strength: The braided construction guarantees a constant diameter along the entire length.
Pleasant feel: Braided yarn is softer in the hand than twisted yarn and is easier to work with.
White: The classic color for traditional rigging work, especially on classic yachts and during restorations.
Red: A striking color for decorative work or for color-coding.
Black: Inconspicuous and practical, shows dirt less, ideal for modern yachts.
For most marling work, 1.0 mm yarn is ideal. 1.5 mm yarn is suitable for thicker ropes or when a particularly robust winding is desired. When marling: Wind the yarn tightly, but not too tightly – it should protect the rope, not constrict it. For a professional finish, you can secure the ends with whipping or carefully melt them with a lighter (for synthetic fibers). Store the spools in a dry place, away from direct sunlight, to preserve the wax coating. With prolonged storage, the wax may harden slightly – simply run the yarn between your fingers to soften it again.
Waxed rigging twine is not suitable for load-bearing applications . It serves exclusively decorative and protective purposes, not as a fastening material. The wax can soften at high temperatures – do not store the spools in direct sunlight or in hot environments. Wax residue may remain on your hands during handling – this can be removed with warm water and soap. Ensure that the twine does not come into contact with solvents, as these can dissolve the wax.
With 500 m per spool, GLEISTEIN rigging twine offers an excellent supply for extensive projects. The long spools are more economical than smaller units and reduce waste. Ideal for shipyards, professional riggers, or ambitious owners who regularly carry out marling work.
