What is a marlspike?

The marlinspike (also called a marlin awl) is a traditional seamanship tool and part of every sailor's basic equipment. Its conical stainless steel tip allows you to open the individual strands of a rope to create splices. The wooden handle fits comfortably in the hand and enables precise work.

Size selection:

  • MARL1 (170mm): Ideal for thinner lines up to 16mm in diameter. Perfect for sheets, halyards, and general onboard work.
  • MARL2 (265mm): For thicker ropes from 16mm diameter. Ideal for mooring lines, anchor lines and heavy rigging work.

Care and handling: Rinse with fresh water and dry after use. Occasionally treat the wooden handle with linseed oil to keep it supple. With proper care, the marlinspike is a tool that will last for generations.

Tip: A marlinspike belongs in every well-equipped ship's workshop. Whether for repairs underway or professional rigging work in port – with this traditional tool you'll be perfectly prepared.
